- 1. PRODUCT OVERVIEW
-
- The leading cause of problems that frustrate Windows 95 users is loss
- of data from a crash. A crash can occur when the hard drive suffers
- physical damage. A system crash can also occur if there is a problem
- with a memory chip or the microprocessor. When an application crashes
- you lose any work in progress. Crashes occur because of conflicts
- between running applications, conflicts between an application and the
- Windows 95 operating system, hardware configuration conflicts, and
- computer viruses.
-
- There are currently no software products available that can fix
- physical problems with hardware. Damaged components must be replaced.
- However, a software solution can alert you to an impending hard disk
- crash and provide you with the ability to backup your work.
-
- REALHELP provides one of the best solutions for intercepting crashes
- by stabilizing the application long enough for you to save your work
- and exit the program normally. However, intercepting crashes is not
- the complete solution. The objective is to make the system as
- conflict-free as possible and to minimize the risk of a crash. Windows
- 95 does not offer much protection against application and hardware
- configuration conflicts, or conflicts caused by computer viruses. The
- only way to prevent crashes is to continuously look for conflicts and
- repair them before the system crashes. REALHELP is one of the few
- products that provides such a solution.

- 2. LAST-MINUTE ADDITIONS AND KNOWN ISSUES:
-
- Install
- -------
- The Find-A-Fix Knowledge Base can be accessed on a local or network
- drive by copying the contents of the entire REALHELP CD-ROM to the
- desired location. Next, simply run the install program from the new
- location. After REALHELP has been installed from the local or
- network drive, Find-A-Fix can access the Knowledge Base
- automatically.
-
-
- General Tips
- ------------
- To disable the background sound effects on the main REALHELP
- console, click on the OPTIONS button and then click on either of the
- double-arrow buttons. This will take you to the Console Options
- screen where you can simply uncheck the "Enable Sound Effects"
- option.
-
- As long as the default setting "Enable automatic capture" is
- checked in the Change Capture manager, individual changes made to
- the system through Problem Preventer, Conflict Detector and
- Performance Optimizer are fully reversible through the Change
- Remover program.
-
- All driver updates found by TuneUp are fully reversible by manually
- starting Change Capture before applying the update. Simply bring up
- the Change Capture manager and click on the "Begin Capture" button.
- Next, install the driver or patch through TuneUp and click the "End
- Capture" button after the update is completed. Any changes made to
- your system by the update patch can be undone by using the Change
- Remover program located in the Repair module on the REALHELP
- console.
-
- Hard disk diagnostics will only report file system problems when run
- from either the Diagnostics module or the Full System Check utility.
- In order to fix file system problems you must run Disk Fix which is
- located in the Quarterdeck Service Manager (QSM).
-
-
- Quarterdeck Service Manager (QSM)
- ---------------------------------
- Applications and other utilities should be inactive when Disk Fix
- and Disk Optimizer are run. Programs that access the hard disk
- while Disk Fix and Disk Optimizer are running may force them to
- restart multiple times.
-
- SCANDISK, DEFRAG, and disk utilities which check the hard disk while
- QSM is running are known to restart multiple times. The solution is
- to either temporarily shut down QSM or simply run Disk Fix or Disk
- Optimizer from within QSM.
-
-
- Hardware Diagnostics
- ---------------------
- Be sure to save any open work prior to running the Full System
- Check, Do All diagnostics, or individual hardware diagnostic
- components. Likewise, as with any diagnostic program, all active
- work in progress should be halted and other system level diagnostics
- must not be running.
-
- The keyboard test will not complete if the keyboard has been
- remapped.
-
- If you are using a left handed mouse in the Mouse diagnostics
- module, the test parameters will be reversed (left=right,
- right=left).
-
-
- Component Modules
- ------------------
- Emergency Recovery reports the number of user files it copies to
- disk, not the total number contained on the floppy(s). There will
- typically be four more files copied which are generated by the
- Emergency Recovery program.
-
- If you wish to register as a TuneUp.com user, launch the Tuneup.com
- program located in the Support module on the REALHELP console. Once
- you have reached the TuneUp.com Web site, simply enter the serial
- number located on the back of your REALHELP CD-ROM sleeve.
-
- Find-A-Fix may display some script language source code in the
- query results if query keywords from your search are found in the
- source code of an HTML document retrieved from the Internet.
-
- ViruSweep may have trouble fixing some files that have been
- irreparably damaged by a virus. The solution is to restore the
- damaged file from back up or manually delete the file from your
- system.
-
- REALHELP Extra Strength shares some components with existing
- versions of TuneUp AV and ViruSweep. Uninstalling TuneUp AV or
- ViruSweep after REALHELP has been installed will cause ViruSweep
- Scan and the Update-It portion of REALHELP Extra Strength to fail.
- At this point you will need to reinstall REALHELP Extra Strength.
- REALHELP preserves its data between installs, so reinstalling will
- not cause any data loss.
-
-
- Online Help and User Guide
- --------------------------
- The Online Help and page 55 of the User Guide refers to an automatic
- fix feature when running Disk Fix. This feature was discontinued
- after Online Help and the User Guide were finalized.
